Sadness Ain't Only For The Famous

Two Sundays ago we escorted Miz Olga Louise to her final resting place. She began her journey as the only one of her siblings to be born in this country, the daughter of Italian immigrants. Her accomplishments include marrying a man who has been the better for it, having children who have answered her bravery with pride, and giving to her community the service that only a dedicated nurse can give. She also had a quirky sense of humor that could take you by surprise.
Back when I was married to her daughter the four of us would play cards. She was always more interested in the social interaction than in the game, playing the best "Gracie Allen" I have ever seen. She was way smarter than she let on.
It's been, oh, maybe three or four years since we played cards, because, you see, Miz Olga Louise started losing her mind to that God Damned Alzheimer's disease. It was when she started to make mistakes she didn't mean to that the rest of us started to get scared.
In my last post I decried Terry Pratchett's diagnosis of Early- Onset-Alzheimer's-Disease. Let me tell you that early or late it doesn't make it any easier to lose somebody you value. I'm just lucky to have known the lady.

Regards,
Daddy
